I see a lot of sites are having issues with pictures appearing. Can someone please let me know if this is a yola error or if it is my laptop?

Hello thecurvyjeweller

I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue. Can you please let me know if you're not seeing your pictures in your Sitebuilder or on your published site?

Also, can you please share your site URL so that we can take a look at what's going on?

Thank you for your patience as we work on this together.

Hi the curvyjeweller

Thanks for the clarification. I can see your images on your site. I've attached as screenshot of one of the pages I see.

However, I notice that you have some images with a very large file size in your File Manager. Web friendly images should between 20 and 100KB each, depending on how many you have on a page. You can see the file size displayed below the preview of the image in your File Manager.

Large images can cause delays in opening, saving, previewing, publishing and viewing your site. This will be a source of frustration to you, and your site visitors.

To resolve this issue the best option is to optimize your images. If your images are added to your page using the Picture Widget, all you need to do is turn the optimizer "on". This will allow for your images to be optimized on your page. For more info please see Image Optimization.

If your images are added to your page using the Text Widget then they will not be optimized. Optimization of images can only be done using the Picture Widget. One option is to re-add your images to your page using the Picture Widget and turn the optimizer "on".

You also have the option to use Picnik within the Sitebuilder or an Image Optimization Tool to resize your images before adding them to your page.

Using Picnik:

1. Click on the "File Manager" button.
2. Click on the picture you wish to edit and then on the "Edit Picture", you will go through to the photo editing site, Picnik.com.
3. Once in Picnik, click on "Resize" (make sure the 'keep proportions' button is selected).
4. Change the size to something smaller.
5. Click on ok and then "Save to Yola".

If the picture is too big to load with Picnik, you can change the file size on your PC and re-upload using the File Manager.

Using an Image Optimization Tool:

You can use the following Image Compression Tool to optimize your image. Simply upload your image, compress and download the smaller compressed image. Then you can upload this smaller image to your file manager and add it your site.

If you have access to image editing software such as Photoshop, you can use their "save for web" function and this will automatically optimize your images and save them in a web friendly format.

Another useful tip is to use thumbnails. Thumbnails are miniature versions of a picture that are hyperlinked to its actual size version. The thumbnail will load fast, and by clicking on it your visitors will be able to see the actual size version. See Thumbnails that link to larger images for more info.

We have an excellent tutorial which is an overview of creating Internet savvy images including information on issues such as screen resolution, image file formats and dpi vs. pixels, here is a link: Images & More Tutorial.

Please let me know if you have any further trouble with this.

Hi Sanja - thanks so much for your time. Unfortunately I can't even see the screenshot you posted lol...

I know this is out of your job description but would you say, since you can see my site properly, that it is actually my laptop that is causing the issue?

Thank you.

p.s I went through and optimized the pics but it still doesn't seem to have helped hence my thought that perhaps it is the laptop.

Hi thecurvyjeweller,

If you can't even see the images on this forum post, it sounds like it could be a problem with your browser. Could you let us know what browser you are using (eg. Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3 etc) and perhaps try a different one to see if that makes a difference?

Do you see anything instead of the pictures? Eg. a red x or something?

Hi Marjie - thanks for responding. I've used IE8 and for 8 months it has been fine, it was just last night that the error happened while I was uploading pics to my site, actually it was since I added the paypal shop site that it started if that makes a difference?

Yes, all I see is the red x in a box.

It is the browser that I am using coz I used IE8 64 bit and it was fine... so do you have a solution for me please?

Thanks so much, have a great weekend.

Hi thecurvyjeweller

Hmmm.. can you try checking the browser settings for your images? Perhaps you may have accidentally clicked something that causes you not to see your images anymore. Here's a link with more information: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283807

Also, I am still seeing that there is still some pictures in your File Manager that is quite large in file size. For example, your first image on your "View Products" page, I believe the image file name is: Bright Blue with clasps.png. This is approx. 509KB in size. This is quite large!

The image dimensions have been scaled down from 909px × 865px to 200px × 190px to fit in your catalog. I would recommend that you actually resize the image to 200px or close to it. Then will help in viewing your images as well.

Please let me know how this goes.

I've uploaded about 10 small pictures or so, and no matter which path I try to take to upload another picture, the link to do it simply will not highlight - like dead text. I have used a TINY fraction of my free space for photos.
