www and non-www. anomalies in Google searches for my site

My site's URL (web address) is: www.bonaparte-art.com
Having recently created my site, I verified and submitted my site as www.bonaparte-art.com. Yet when doing a 'site:www.bonaparte-art.com' search the homepage does not appear. Only the other pages do. Yet with a site: non-www search (site:bonaparte-art.com), the homepage appears above all the others. How and why?

Further to this, the search 'bonaparte art' eventually comes up with my site in the listings, pointing to http://bonaparte-art.com/, and referring to the site as 'bonaparte-art.com/'

Similarly searching for bonaparte-art.com puts my homepage at the top of the listings, but searching for www.bonaparte-art.com doesn't bring up the homepage, only brings up some of the other pages - and further down in the results.

Could I have somehow excluded the www. from either the sitemap or verification processes? Webmaster Tools has the site listed as www.bonaparte-art.com.

And once this is sorted (possibly involving me re-verifying my site if that is even possible, or resubmitting a site map), can someone point me to how to go about verifying the non-www.version without changing my settings? ie the first verification pasted a Google code into my site. Surely if I verify a second non-www version I'll have to paste a different code into the same spot on my site - how can this possibly work?

Hello Paul,
Your site is definitely indexed with www.bonapart-art.com as the primary. Your domain automatically has a "primary domain". A primary domain is the domain that all others will resolve to.

The search engine would regard www.bonapart-art.com and bonapart-art.com as different domain names, unless one is made the primary domain. That is why you see www.bonapart-art.com in the address bar whether you use the www or the non www version, this is because www.bonapart-art.com is the primary domain and the other is automatically redirecting to it. No matter which domain is used, the person will get to your site. Google sees that your primary domain is the www version so they are listing this in the search engine results pages as well. Does this answer the questions you had about how your site was being listed? If not, please let me know.

Kind Regards,
