Hi,

Thanks

Hi there John,

The Yola Sitebuilder won't work too well on the iPad.

Safari for iPad does not support Flash, and many elements of our Sitebuilder are Flash-based. It would therefore be a significant technical challenge to produce a version of Yola that would have enough functionality and still run on an iPad.

I will pass our request on to our developers, and perhaps as the adoption of both Yola and the iPad increases, this is something that we could consider.

Hi Jeremy, I never knew it was flash based. Because, I thought it was all JavaScript because when I right click on it, the regular right click menu pops up and it doesn't say "About Adobe Flash 10..." and "Settings..." It just says what the regular web page right click menu is. It looks all JavaScript based.

Hi there Nathan,

I checked with our engineers and while it isn't Flash based it does have some flash components. This would probably interfere with it working correctly on a non-flash-enabled machine.

Heya John -

It's something we've tossed around as an idea, but we don't know how much interest there is. It's not on our roadmap for the immediate future, at least.

So I'll throw it out there to all of you watching as well - would you want to use sitebuilder on the ipad or iphone? And if so, what would you want? Full editing, or just updating content and tweaking things? An app, or a website?

Thanks for bringing this up!

Hi Stephanie
I think an app for updating the blog would be more what i wanted,
Any maybe use of basic widgets like HTML,Text and Pictures.
Without widget box,Maps etc

These are what I would use most

Thanks for the reply

Hi -
I'm using a few web based apps for business use and Yola is the only one that is heavily Flash dependent and therefore non-Safari (and therefore non-iPad) compatible. To answer your questions:

would you want to use sitebuilder on the ipad or iphone? Yes.

And if so, what would you want? Full editing or as much functionality as possible. However, use of basic widgets like HTML,Text and Pictures.would be a good start.
Thanks - glad you're looking into this - will it be impossible to solve the compatibility issue?

Thanks for your feedback. The more people we hear from on this, the better. As Stephanie said, it is not on our immediate roadmap but if there is a lot of interest it may move up the priority list. I am willing to out myself as a hopeless iPhone and iPad addict. I can't see myself wanting to build a whole website on an iPhone, but I would certainly consider some basic editing on an iPad. So this one has my vote ;)

I bought an iPad some weeks ago now and was quite amazed when i tried to open up the Yola site builder for the first time, and it worked. Almost. Everything was smooth untill i wanted to post something new in my blog. You can edit the title, but when you're trying to add some content to the blog post, nothing happens. You can click on the textbox but nothing happens. It would be so damn awesome to post some new things on your blog when on the go, so if it's possile please fix it :).

I know this topic is old, but it's still relevant :P

Hi Folks,
I've just bought an ipad and am about to give away the laptop to a family member. I went to add content to my yola site on the ipad only to find the obvious. Not only do I need to keep updating my site but I need to create another one. I find it very frustrating that I cannot use yola. I'm thinking I may have to find another site that doesn't use flash (headache coming) and I really would prefer to stay with yola if I could.

I really feel that tablet computing is the way of the future and tablets are to laptops what laptops once were to desktops. I believe it would be a great benefit to yola to try to bridge that gap - if at all possible...

Hello, I am sorry that it isn't working on the Apple iPad. Yola isn't actually using flash but it is flash based (sorry, that didn't really make since). They use mostly all JavaScript on Yola but for some reason it wont work on the iPad. I am sure Yola is developing an app or something.... An App would be cool. Hopefully they will have that soon.

Hi Nathan,
Flash based - flash components - problems with javascript - dunno! The bliss of ignorance. If yola developed an app for the ipad it would stand proudly on my front page. I'm hoping that yola will develop it and that this problem is just a FLASH in the pan! (groan!!!)

Hi bslkmt,

I wonder why iPads don't have Flash Player. It's not good because there is lots of web pages made with flash, and you can't view them on iPads at all! Hopefully Apple makes it where iPads can have flash on them!

Sincerely,
Nathan

Hi Nathan,
Dunno! Personally I think it's ridiculous that apple seems so flashaphobic and that everyone else needs to find ways of working around their paranoia. When similar flash incorporated products hit the market I think people will vote with their wallets, until then we need to work with what we've got.

Bernie

I have an iPad and would love to see an app that can let me edit my page. Full editing capabilities would be great, but at least being able to add text, HTML and pictures would be a good start. Also, being able to to email pictures from my phone to post straight to my blog would be nice. Right now, editing my yola site is the only thing I ever touch my laptop for. As far as flash, i do like not having flash on my iPad usually. It saves me from all of those horrible ads and videos that like to play on many sites when I don't want them to. For the most part (except on yola) a lack of flash support is not a problem for me.

Thats true Julie, but then there are those sites that are made with all flash and then you can't view them and thats the bad part. But it would be cool to email an email address and then it posts to our blog.

Sincerely,
Nathan

There are free to download flash blockers that let you control what flash content you want to see. Apple doesn't seem to think it's iPad owners are capable of using it.

On the other hand here's a list of iPad friendly websites whose owners have taken the effort to 'get with the times'.

Even if flash came to iOS, I think devices such as the iPhone, and even the iPad are far too small for mainstream editing. It would be nice to perhaps have an app as suggested to upload basic content such as blog posts. I know for a fact I would make use of this!

It would be wonderful having the ability to blog about something as it happens while you're on the go, be it on my iPad or iPhone. Maybe even have some integrations such as posting a picture you've just taken with your device camera.

Anyway, it's great to know that this idea has been considered. It certainly be an awesome addition!

I would like to see this as well & I'm typing this on my iPad. An app would be great or just allow the WordPress app to control the blog portion of your site
Hi, the "mobile" feature that is coming out soon, will that address Apple devices ??

Once again, tO show some interest and to bring this all back up again.
I'm also an iPad 2, iPhone and Mac user, and my business has Issued an iPad out to each of the staff to maintain communication with our customer base. However I find it quite disheartening to discover that I have to wait untill I'm in the office or at home to update our site, especially when most of our business is done out and about.
It's been 4 months so I'm just wondering roughly how many people would need to show an interest before you consider creating some form of version ready for IOS use.
Many Thanks and Kind Regards

Hey everyone

I'm a UI engineer here at Yola.

Let me start off by saying that we would love (especially me) to build an IOS app or have Yola run natively on IOS safari. We'd probably be the first website builder to do it and it would be awesome. Problem is, in my estimation it's quite unlikely that we'll be able to get the SiteBuilder running in IOS Safari. It's also quite unlikely that we'll build a separate IOS application for the purposes of updating blog content.

Here are some of the technical issues that stand in the way of bringing Yola to Safari on IOS.

IOS Safari doesn't support the contentEditable DOM API. This is the bit of magic that lets you edit text widgets in Yola. This rules out our most popular widget. We could offer a stripped down version without any formatting options, but that seems like a big draw-back.

IOS Safari has a different mouse event model. This would offer some significant challenges when we needed to implement drag and drop operations.

IOS Safari doesn't support flash, which powers our uploads and image editing features - we could work around that though.

iPad resoultion isn't very high, which might mean we would need to make two versions of the UI which is quite complicated and hard to maintain. This might change on iPad 3 with retina display... but that's just a rumor at the moment.

There are also a few reasons it doesn't make sense to build a native IOS application.

Making the entire application IOS native would take too long and cost too much. I would love to do it - it would be so cool, and the only thing like it in the App Store, but the project would be too big for us to take on.

We could make something that would allow you to do something like update your blog, but again, bad news :(

Our blog currently has no external API and requires a republish to update. We would need to build an external API, pretty much rebuild our blogging system and migrate our old users data.

That, coupled with us having to hire new engineers to build the IOS application means the project would be too big to be feasible right now.

As always, we'll keep an eye on how IOS technology develops, but for the medium term I don't think we'll be playing in this space.

Cheers
/Pete

I recently created a Yola account to share my photography, but then I realized that Yola was yet another webpage that didn't allow photo uploads from Apple devices, such as my iPad. I'm on the go alot, and I don't have any real use of a desktop other then this, and I'm certainly not going to buy one just for this. Perhaps an iPad friendly layout and photo upload process could be conjured up? Or perhaps a Yola app? Just throwing ideas out there.
