Yola Website Makeover Challenge

  • Updated 9 years ago

All of us have seen them. Bad websites for great small businesses. It might even be your website.

Here's where you jump in. Stop the insanity. Lend a hand. Nominate a small business website that needs some help. We'll pick one out and if you're a web designer, graphic artist, or just love Yola, you can do a makeover.

The fun doesn’t stop there because there are prizes galore. The winning designer gets $2,000. The small business owner gets a shiny new Website worth $1,000. All Twitterers who retweet the @Yolacontest will be entered for a chance to win two tickets to the U2 360° Tour and a Blackberry.

Send in your nominations. In August we'll start accepting entries for the makeover design. So what are you waiting for? Nominate now.

Remember to follow us on twitter to get updates on the contest!

Please add one thing....Keep nominations confidential unless the nominee is fine with this....This is a great idea otherwise.

John, we will definitely seek the winning small business owner's permission before making anything public.

Thanks!

Hi John,
Were you referring to websites that are nominated by others? These will remain confidential as well.

We can only say 'millions of thanks' if you do an make-over for us. We dont have a proper income and we try to supplement our income through this website with something that can incure some income for us. We hope for the best to happen regarding this for both our income results and business entrepeneurship.

I plan on making a design for this. May we contact the owner of acecedarpark in order to ask questions? The rules do not say we can't but I don't want to get disqualified. The rules also say the website's owner's design priorities would be listed on the yola makeover page but they are not?

Hi Diane, please do not contact the owner. You should make the best use of the guidance Anna has provided (http://www.yolamakeover.com/design-gu...) and then use your judgment on areas that are not covered. Good luck!

So now the company has been chosen...

Do we have the right to use all the images and text from the exsisting website?

Also should we create it in a new account so they can add to it later... or would they want the winner to add to it.

PS. no offense to the business but i can see why this got nominated... for example the Banannas page's CSS is completly different to the rest of the site.

Lee.

You have the right to all text and images from the existing website. And you don't have to worry about creating a new account. Just use your existing Yolal account. Good luck!

May I ask why this competition is for US citizen's only? Is it about the
money (currency) ? I would have given it a shot for a "free domain" and a badge!

I too feel badly for those of you out of the US... I wonder if YOLA will allow co built websites with Americans having partnerships abroad to help build a site and split the award.

Taxes may be an issue but if that is dealt with between site builders and the American can hold back the amount of taxes and then split the remaining then I think that should be workable.

Additionally, is it possible for the owners of the website being rebuilt to provide us with employee pics and names so that we can use them on the site we build for the contest. A brief bio on the company history including what year founded would be nice.

Hi guys

We asked Charlene to respond to this one, and she will be able to add more detail and respond specifically to Ed's suggestions.

However, while we are waiting I thought I would say a few words. The reason for the contest being available to US residents only are purely legal, I am afraid. There are significant legal requirements to running a contest of this nature, and each countries' laws are different. The only way to do it would be to run separate contests in different countries, which would be quite a major undertaking. We wish we could include our global customer base. Remember, I am in South Africa too, so I also feel kinda left out on behalf of my country, but I do understand the reasons.

@Ed - will ask Charlene to respond to you.

Hey Ed, thanks for the concern buddy.

I know the two weeks deadline to build the site will not be a restriction for a man with your website building skills. I just wanted to let you know that if you need any help,
I mean anything, please don't hesitate to ask.

I think you stand a good chance of walking away with this one, and seeing as most
of the champs are excluded from taking part, I was thinking maybe we can all get
behind you (and John if he is participating).

We all have individual strengths, from HTML, CSS, Bloging to proofreading etc, etc.
I'm hoping the other champs will get behind me on this one. Kind of giving back to
you guys for all the help over the months. For free of course...

Now, because of the idiot I am and not reading the rules properly, and after receiving
three emails telling me about the chance of winning $2000, I rushed over and created
a new Gmail account and signed up for a new Yola account so I could get started.
I thought the nomination phase was for US based websites only, and that the nominated one would be open for anyone to re-design. Guess I read it wrong :-(

Obviously all the good site names like "acehardware.yolasite" and "hardware.yolasite" were taken already but I don't think the one I got is too bad.
If anyone out there wants the pair, (Gmail account and Yolasite), give me a shout. Otherwise I'm going to delete them.

I would hate to think that im 'teaching my grandmother to suck eggs' but if you need anything Ed just ask.

Perhaps a review would work.

Boomer, i too missed the first line of the terms :) - i had a folder full of images and links ready to go. - I think i got caught up in the excitment.

Hey Everyone,

I'm working with Charlene on the Makeover Challenge and she's asked me to respond because I've been in close contact with our legal counsel. Monique is absolutely right. Counsel advised that we only open the competition to U.S. residents because of the legal risks associated with operating in international jurisdictions. We do value all of our users tremendously, however, and are exploring ways to make future competitions open to everyone.

That said, for the purposes of this competition, users from outside of the U.S. who are still interested should feel free to submit designs but you will not be eligible for the prize money.

Thanks for your understanding and I'm sorry to everyone who got their hopes up, only to be disappointed.

Best,
Bryan

Hey B

Thanks for the vote of confidence on my abilities but it is an open game and anyone stands a chance of pulling the rabbit out of the hat so to speak.

As to the Champs getting behind me... While I think that would be super I would rather see you all help someone with less time in the site builder than me. I imagine that there are many new and even seasoned builders who would love it to have their very own Champ helping them. That is why we are here is it not?

The site I am building I am keeping the principle (K.I.S.S.) to mind and purposely not including any custom CSS or HTML to make it easy for the one editing later to understand. I think that if most users would see my site builder for H.B.P. they would all have their jaw drop and say "What, how and no way" a lot. I don't want to overwhelm the one who has to edit the site with coding that can with one misaligned widget throw off the entire page. I am sure that you know what I mean ;)

Oh and by the by... The name of the sub-domain matters little as their domain would point to the new website and would mask the sub-domain anyway...

I'm just gonna throw in my 2 cents! I apologize ahead of time if this causes some ripples.

I would really encourage those who are participating in this Yola Make-Over, to consider keeping their site designs under wraps and that it be done solely by their own hand.

There are a couple of reasons why I say this:

1. By doing it totally on your own, really speaks to the ability you have to creatively design and implement your ideas with the site builder. It also builds confidence not only for yourself but for others who may want to utilize your talent - especially those involved in the YEP program.

2. It also helps to lessen the bias slant one might have when voting on which 10 sites should be nominated. (I hope that these site nominations will be kept anonymous).

I guess that's all I really had to say! =)
